With so much talk on why you must make vegetables a part of your diet, it is quite a surprise that some vegetables are nothing but bad news.

Yes, there are many unhealthy vegetables out there that do a lot more harm than good. Some of these vegetables include the popular ones you add to your everyday meals. Others could be the ones you use once in a while. Whether you use them often or not, you should completely avoid consuming these unhealthy vegetables

Broccoli might be considered as a powerhouse of nutrients, but like every other vegetable in the cruciferous family, it contains some chemicals that could have potentially serious side effects on your entire system.

Broccoli is packed with goitrogens – chemicals that repress the function of the thyroid gland by blocking iodine intake. The goitrogens cause the thyroid gland to enlarge thereby leading to goiter.

There are many groups of goitrogens and unfortunately for the nutritious broccoli, it is packed with the worst kind – the thiocyanates. Consuming these chemicals could result in a very serious condition of hypothyroidism.

In general, potatoes are great veggies. They could help lower blood pressure and reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke, but that is only if you consume them the right way.

Probably, you use tomatoes in all your meals and you can’t just imagine cooking without them. The problem is, tomatoes are part of the nightshade family of vegetables and they pose the same risk as other members of the family. But the complications caused by taking tomatoes go beyond their ties to the nightshade family.

Tomatoes contain malic acid and citric acid, normally, these acids do not pose any danger to your health, but eating too much could make your stomach very acidic and cause heartburn.

Additionally, eating too many tomatoes may cause kidney stones to form. Other side effects of taking too many tomatoes include diarrhea, excessive sodium intake, lycopenodermia, poisoning, and joint pain.

These veggies might add flavor to your dishes, but the adverse health effects of consuming too many of them outweigh the benefits.

6. Kale

Just like Broccoli, consuming an unhealthy amount of kale could make you bloat. These two veggies belong to the cruciferous vegetable which contains a nutritious compound – raffinose. This compound remains undigested in your gut until it is fermented by bacteria. This process produces gas which in turn, makes you bloat.

Final Thoughts

You shouldn’t have any problems or experience any of the side effects above if you consume these veggies moderately. Also, you should consider where your veggies are grown or shipped from. Some veggies contain unhealthy amounts of pesticides which could lead to poisoning if consumed for a long time.
